Why you won't find us on any freelance marketplace platforms
Dean Cook • 21 April 2023

There's no denying that the rise of marketplace websites when searching for freelance design services has helped to connect businesses with designers, but with it comes questions. Here, we highlight why you won't see us on marketplace platforms.

When hiring a freelance magazine designer, a popular choice is to use marketplace platforms such as Fiverr or Upwork. While these platforms make it easy to find freelancers for various tasks, there are reasons why you may want to consider having direct access to an experienced magazine production artist without a marketplace platform in sight.

  • You'll get better service. You will have direct access to any members of our team who will be able to understand your aims and objectives fully. It's more than just the quality of the final output; our communication and planning with our clients are important.
  • You'll save money. Marketplaces take a service fee on every project. This can add up with more considerable project work, such as magazine production.
  • You'll have more control. Unlike a marketplace, where you're at the mercy of the freelancer, we take ownership of projects and deliver within realistic timeframes, communicating what those timeframes are before we commence work.
  • We don't cut corners. And for very good reason. Work supplied by marketplace freelancers may need correcting or recreating later, which can invite further unexpected costs. We frequently see it with supplied artwork.
  • You're protected. If marketplace freelancers don't deliver on their promises and you miss your deadline, it can be difficult to get your money back. We prefer to provide our clients with confidence when choosing to work with us directly, which is why we are proud to have been independently vetted and registered with Trading Standards' Buy with Confidence scheme.
  • Experience. Each team member is not only fully conversant with continual investment in the latest software and supportive tools, but we have also worked in prepress production departments within commercial printing organisations and, therefore, understand the intricacies and technicalities when it comes to fulfilling design work.
  • Collaboration. Some projects may require additional members of production artists to deliver a project within a shortened timeframe. Being a team, we can expedite any requirements once we have identified and justified why and how this would work. If using a marketplace platform, how would this foresight be identified, and how would this work when hiring individuals using a marketplace platform?
  • Management. We will plan and manage projects to ensure all remain on track to meet deadlines.
  • Resourcing assistance. With many years in the business, we have a bank of contacts we have previously worked with, enabling clients to enlist additional services only when required.
  • Availability. Illness can strike anytime, or a team member could be on holiday. It doesn't mean your project should be put on hold. Unlike a marketplace freelancer, we can provide you with a choice. We can work around it, or if time is of the essence, we can move the job to another team member who can pick up the project, minimising delay or incurring additional costs.

In a nutshell, we offer clients direct access to our experienced production artists to deliver an efficient and cost-effective reliable service, directly managing your project as we strive to exceed expectations while keeping pricing as low as possible, which is why you won't find us on any marketplace platform.

A hybrid magazine is produced once and published digitally and in print with interactive features
by Dean Cook 21 November 2024
A hybrid magazine is a publication that is designed and produced once so it can be published digitally and in print, with interactive elements available in both formats. This approach can save time rather than creating two separate products — one geared specifically for digital and the other for print, such as working to different sizes or pagination lengths. Interactive features allow a more engaging and immersive experience for the reader regardless of whether they read the publication online or in print. What are the key features of hybrid magazines 1. Interactive Elements: QR Codes: Scan these codes to access exclusive online content, videos, podcasts, and interactive games. Augmented Reality (AR): Use a smartphone to overlay digital content, like 3D models or animations, onto the printed page. 2. Digital Extensions: Online Platforms: Access additional content, such as web-only articles, updated-driven content, podcasts, webinars or forums. Social Media Integration: Connect with the magazine's community and other readers through social media channels. Benefits of hybrid magazines Enhanced Reader Experience: Interactive elements and digital extensions make reading more engaging and memorable. Increased Reader Engagement: Hybrid magazines encourage readers to participate and share content actively. Innovative Advertising Opportunities: Brands can leverage the unique format to create innovative and interactive ad campaigns. Data-Driven Insights: Tracking digital interactions provides insight into reader behaviour and preferences. The future of print Hybrid magazines demonstrate the enduring appeal of digital and print media. By embracing technology and innovation, print publications can continue to thrive in the digital age.
